We believe that every young person should be introduced to the field of Urban Planning. Our communities need more planners!
Since there aren’t enough of us, it’s a field with fantastic job prospects. It’s also a field where training and transition across specialty areas is both possible and encouraged, and thus you will never be bored. It’s a field where you can do as much math, engineering, and data collection as you’d like—but where you can also spend time talking to people from all walks of life, all the while knowing you are making a real impact on your community.
Even beyond Urban Planning, though, we feel that it is incredibly important for young people to be made aware of as many career areas as possible before they begin narrowing their focus—and they often begin narrowing their focus remarkably early.
We start asking children “What do you want to be when you grow up?” almost as soon as they can talk. I want to be a firefighter! A doctor! I want to drive a really big truck! It’s exciting for parents and community members alike to dream of the future alongside our children… But there is a reason that so many young people end up focusing on a relatively small number of careers: You can’t dream about a future that you don’t know exists.
Please help the children in your life dream of as many futures as possible!
