Adventures in Planning!

Years in the making, Adventures in Planning is YEP! Youth Engagement Planning’s landmark 9-week program focused on teaching 5th-8th graders about urban planning.

The program aligns with the elements of STEAM and focuses on inspiring youth to be strong leaders advocating for change in their communities.

The downloadable workbook is divided into nine sections, each intended to be covered over the course of a week and each covering a different sub-discipline of urban planning:

  1. Discover Planning (Planning 101)

  2. Follow the Map (Land Use & Zoning)

  3. Walking Back in Time (Historic Preservation)

  4. The Neighborhood Pride (Housing & Neighborhoods)

  5. The Wind Farmer (Sustainability & Environmental Planning & Energy)

  6. The World Around Me (Urban Design & Tactical Urbanism)

  7. Every Trip Has a Story (Transportation)

  8. The Business of the City (Economic Development)

  9. The Future is the Biggest Adventure (Comprehensive Planning)

This 9-week program is the result of countless hours of labor lovingly completed by our team, often over nights and weekends. Our hope is that you will find our work useful, and we are grateful to everyone who engages with our materials. Your engagement helps further our mission of introducing students everywhere to urban planning!

If you or your organization are able, please consider making a donation to YEP! so that we can continue to create materials like these in the future.

We provide this document, the other downloadable PDFs found elsewhere on our website, and the materials available through our workshops & presentations FREE for your use with the understanding that you will use them in a way that is in keeping with YEP! Youth Engagement Planning’s mission model of planners donating their time as an investment in the next generation of community leaders, planners, and advocates.

We trust that colleagues and potential partners will not seek to profit from materials and methods that we provide without cost. If you ever have questions about the appropriate use of our materials, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
